Overview
Course overview
This session explores Oak’s high-quality, free and adaptable primary geography curriculum, developed in partnership with the Geographical Association. It includes a look at how research and evidence underpin the curriculum, alongside the key decisions that inform its sequencing, including how learning begins with pupils’ local geographies before extending outwards to wider regional, national and global contexts. It also considers how diverse places, voices and perspectives are embedded throughout, and how mapping and fieldwork are used to develop geographical thinking.
Alongside this, the session includes a focus on how Oak can be adapted to work effectively in different contexts, including practical approaches to tailoring resources to reflect local areas, pupil needs and school settings. It also considers how additional materials can be used to complement Oak, and how lessons can be flexed to suit different approaches, supporting informed, professional decision-making so that Oak works meaningfully and effectively for pupils.
