Overview

Course overview

This course begins by giving you the opportunity to hear from Rachel, a Head of Geography who has recently been through a successful ‘deep dive’. Through the course, you are encouraged to consider what the Ofsted Education Inspection Framework means for your own department and critically reflect on some key questions around intent, implementation and impact. There are also opportunities to explore how specific themes can be woven throughout the KS3 curriculum so that your intent is fully implemented and positively impacts student outcomes.

Meet your course leaders, Rachel and Becky.

Supporting research / references

The Ofsted Education Inspection Framework (2019) is underpinned by extensive research evidence, including the importance of teacher subject knowledge and support.

Episode 31 of GeogPod (2021) interviews Iain Freeland, Her Majesty's Inspector and National Lead for Geography and highlights some key characteristics of ‘good geography’.

Key learning aims

  • To better understand the Ofsted Education Inspection Framework and subject ‘deep dive’ process.
  • To critically reflect on your curriculum intent and to consider how this is translated in the classroom.

Expected impact on teachers

  • Increased knowledge and confidence of the Ofsted inspection and subject ‘deep dive’ process.
  • Increased understanding of the importance of having a clear curriculum intent.
  • Increased knowledge and understanding of how your intent can be implemented in the geography classroom.

Expected impact on student outcomes

  • A more coherent geography curriculum with a clear intent will enable students to better understand the purpose of what they are studying.
  • A more consistently implemented curriculum will support all students in their study of geography.
